Author’s Note, October 11, 2020 – I made a few minor wording and punctuation changes for clarity at points throughout the essay. It is also worth noting that, since this essay was written, two American astronauts traveled to the International Space Station on a rocket built by SpaceX as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. It was the first launch since 2011 of U.S. astronauts from U.S. soil in an American-made spacecraft, ending the nine-year period of reliance on the Russian space agency that is referred to in the essay. NASA’s own spacecraft, the Orion, is still under development.
